How does SEO work? A plain-English guide

Prem JasujaBy Prem Jasuja, Founder · 7 min read · September 2026

SEO works by helping search engines find your pages, understand what they are about, and trust them enough to show them to people searching for what you offer. Do all three well and you earn steady, free traffic from buyers. Here is how each part works.

1. Crawling and indexing

Search engines send bots to read the web. If a bot cannot reach or render your page, that page cannot rank, it does not exist to Google. This is the technical layer: a clean site structure, fast pages, working links and no crawl traps. Get this wrong and nothing else matters.

2. Relevance: matching search intent

Once a page is indexed, Google decides which queries it should answer. That comes down to whether your content genuinely matches what the searcher wants, the right topic, the right depth, the right format. A page targeting the wrong intent will not rank no matter how good it looks.

3. Authority and trust

When several pages are relevant, Google ranks the one it trusts most. Trust is built through quality content, links from other reputable sites, a consistent brand presence, and clear expertise. This is the slowest part to build and the hardest to fake.

Why SEO takes time

Crawling is fast, but relevance and trust compound over months. That is why SEO is a 4 to 6 month play, not a switch. The upside is durable: rankings you earn keep working without paying per click.

SEO and ads together

The fastest way to do SEO well is to build it on data you already have. If you run Google Ads, you know exactly which keywords convert. Target those first. See SEO vs PPC for how the two fit together, and our SEO service for how we run it.
