Instagram Story ads are the full-screen, vertical ads that appear between people's Stories. They are one of the highest-attention placements on Meta, and they are simple to set up once you know the steps. Here is how to create one properly, the specs that matter, and the creative rules that decide whether it converts or gets skipped.
Two ways to run a Story ad
You can promote a Story straight from the Instagram app in a couple of taps, which is fine for a quick boost. But for real targeting, tracking and control, build it in Meta Ads Manager. That is the route below, and the one that actually drives results.
Step by step in Meta Ads Manager
- Pick your objective. Choose the goal that matches the outcome you want, usually Sales, Leads or Traffic. The objective tells Meta who to show the ad to.
- Set targeting and budget. Define your audience, or use a lookalike built from your best customers, and set a daily budget you can afford to learn on.
- Choose the placement. Either let Advantage+ placements run and let Meta optimize, or manually select Instagram Stories if you want to control it. For a pure Story ad, select the Stories placement.
- Upload vertical creative. Use a 9:16 asset, 1080 by 1920 pixels. A Story ad fills the whole screen, so anything square or horizontal will look wrong and underperform.
- Add your CTA and link. Pick one clear call to action (Shop Now, Sign Up, Learn More) and point it at a fast, matching landing page.
- Confirm tracking, then publish. Make sure your Meta Pixel and Conversions API are firing so you can measure real results, not just clicks.
Creative rules that make Story ads convert
- Hook in the first second. People swipe fast. Lead with the message or the visual that stops them, not a slow intro.
- Design for sound off. Most Stories play muted. Use captions and on-screen text so the ad works without audio.
- Keep it vertical and native. The best Story ads look like content, not a banner dropped into the feed.
- One idea, one CTA. Do not cram. A single, clear ask beats a busy ad every time.
- Leave room at the edges. Keep key text away from the top and bottom so the profile name and the CTA button do not cover it.
Common mistake
Running one static image and calling it done. Story ads reward movement and testing. Ship a few variations, let the data pick the winner, and refresh before fatigue sets in.
