What is GEO? Generative Engine Optimization, explained

Prem JasujaBy Prem Jasuja, Founder · 6 min read · September 2026

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. It is the practice of structuring your content and brand presence so generative AI engines, ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity and the AI Overviews inside search, mention and cite you when they answer a buyer's question.

Traditional SEO gets you ranked in a list of blue links. GEO gets you named inside the answer itself, before the buyer ever clicks anything. As more people start their research by asking an AI instead of typing a query, that shift matters. If the model does not know your brand, you are invisible in the exact moment a decision is being formed.

How GEO is different from SEO

SEO optimizes for a ranking position on a results page. GEO optimizes for being retrieved and quoted by a language model. The two overlap, strong, well-structured content helps both, but the goals differ. SEO wins a click. GEO wins a mention.

The other difference is trust signals. AI engines lean heavily on clear, factual, well-cited content and on what other credible sources say about you across the web. That makes off-site presence and consistency as important as your own pages.

What actually influences whether AI cites you

How to start with GEO

Begin by auditing what the AI engines already say when someone asks about your category. Then fix the gaps: publish clear answer-first content, tighten your structured data, and build consistent brand mentions on the sites those models trust. It compounds slowly, so starting early is the advantage.

This sits right next to Answer Engine Optimization. If you want the full picture of how paid and organic visibility work together, our Generative Engine Optimization service and our AEO service cover both sides.
